The Department of Mathematics is one of the most prestigious Mathematics departments in the country and is also one of the oldest among the six departments of the Faculty of Science, University of Ruhuna. Our goal is to offer students high-quality programs by equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed for Science graduates in Mathematics and related fields.

The Department offers a wide variety of courses in Mathematics/Statistics, Applied and Industrial Mathematics for undergraduate students in both Physical and Bio science streams. In response to industry demands, particularly from the banking and insurance industries, the Department recently launched a new degree program in Financial Mathematics and Industrial Statistics. Moreover, the Department offers Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy degrees, under the supervision of Senior academics in the department.

The Department of Mathematics is particularly strong in Statistics, Computational and Applied Mathematics, Interdisciplinary fields, and Operational Research. Collaborating with industries, Universities, educational institutions, and research centers locally and internationally is warmly welcomed by the Department.
